Howard E. Chandler, 98, Greensburg

Howard Eugene Chandler, 98, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones, on April 4, 2026. He was born on March 4, 1928, in Ripley County, the son of Bernice and Eva (Reynolds) Chandler.

Howard attended New Marion High School and, as soon as he was of age, proudly entered the service. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the famed 82nd Airborne Division, an accomplishment he carried with honor throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Howard returned home and began working alongside close friends in the junking business. He later found his lifelong calling in tree trimming and painting—trades he became well-known for throughout the community. Howard trimmed the iconic courthouse tree in Greensburg for many years, continuing well into his eighties. His dedication and fearlessness even earned him a mention in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

A hardworking man through and through, Howard was rarely seen idle. If he wasn’t sleeping, he was working. He was also an avid coin collector and enjoyed the simple satisfaction of staying busy and productive.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Barbara Blanford; and his sister, Elizabeth Warth; grandchildren: Risa Jones, Jeff Blanford, Kim Newell, Scott Wickard, Jeannie Chandler, Shane Chandler, Candy Spurlock, and Happy Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Debbie Wickard; his son, Ronald Chandler; his brother, Robert Chandler; and seven sisters: Joan Dicus, June Walker, Lila Pickett, Rosaline Grisby, Shirley Patrick, and Betty Chandler.

A celebration of life, along with military honors, will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Howard’s honor to the Greensburg–Decatur County Animal Shelter.
