(Greensburg, IN) – Decatur County Commissioners agreed on Monday to sign a letter of intent to proceed with plans to build a new Greensburg/Decatur County Animal Shelter.

The current facility on Park Road (pictured) is limited by a lack of space and prone to flooding, which happened recently.

Chris Ramey is the founder of Friends of the Greensburg/Decatur County Animal Shelter serves as president of the shelter board.

“By doing that (signing the letter of intent), it allows myself and the rest of my board, and the Friends of the Animal Shelter to continue our work to raise funds for that new shelter,” Ramey said.

It would be located on South County Road 200 West next to the Decatur County Highway Department headquarters.

Ramey says a new facility was the vision of late director Minde Meyers, who passed away last December at the age of 54 following an illness.

“I think this is a long time coming, but Minde really saw the future, and really wanted things to come together,” he said. “I think now that she’s passed, I think she’s pushing this forward.”

Ramey says county commissioner Jeremy Pasel is expected to appear at the next shelter board meeting to continue discussions on the next steps.

If you’d like to donate either money or time to serve on the board, contact Ramey at (812) 593-6537.

“We also have a Facebook page,” he added. “One of the things I’d like to remind people of, even if it’s not money but you’d like to donate an item, or a car or a boat, whatever it might be, we can always auction those off and help us reach our future goals.”
