VERSAILLES, IN — Versailles State Park has added a History Room to the newly-remodeled Nature Center and will hold a grand opening for the new exhibit over Memorial Day weekend.

The park’s Nature Center and History Room will have a soft opening on Friday, May 27 from 2-6 pm.

The grand opening will take place over two days: Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29 between Noon and 6 pm on both days.

Other activities are planned at the park that weekend.

The land on which Versailles State Park sits was purchased by the federal government during the Great Depression.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was commissioned to create a federal park in Versailles, which was turned over to the State of Indiana in 1943.

It became known as Versailles State Park that year under the then-Indiana Conservation Department, which is now known as the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The park’s historian Bill Dalman and the Friends of Versailles State Park decided to permanently display historical items and documents in a History Room at the Nature Center.

With the help of a grant from the Indiana Parks Alliance and fundraisers held in 2021, the group was able to generate enough funds to furnish the History Room.
