Heading into Wednesday game, the Cincinnati Reds were looking for their 11 straight win, a feat that hadn’t been achieved by the franchise since 1957. It took another comeback, but Cincinnati came out on top completing a series sweep of the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-3.
Colorado threw a couple of haymakers early with 3 solo home runs in the first 4 innings to make it a 3-0 lead.
The Reds would fight back, putting up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3. Luke Maile knocked in the first 2 runs on a single, and TJ Friedl would drive in the 3rd and final run of the inning on a single of his own.
The game would remain tied until Jake Fraley’s two-run home run in the bottom of the 8th gave Cincinnati the 5-3 advantage.
Colorado would not go away quietly. Randal Grichuk would get on with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate in Jorge Alfaro. However, Reds Reliever Ben Farmer was able to get Alfaro to line out to first to give Cincinnati their win their 11th straight win.
Jake Fraley went 2-4 at the plate with a home run and 2 RBI.
In his 4th major league start, Andrew Abbott struck out 10 and allowed 3 runs in 6 innings of work. Earning the win in relief was Ian Gibaut, who is now 8-1 on the season. Farmer recorded his second save of the season.
The Reds are off today. They’ll return to action tomorrow night when they begin a 3-game set at Great American Ball Park against the Atlanta Braves. Coverage on 103.9 WRBI starts at 6:10.
