Lawmakers override trans athlete veto; ACLU sues to stop ban

STATEHOUSE — The Republican-led Indiana legislature voted yesterday to override Gov. Holcomb’s veto of a bill banning transgender students from competing in girls’ K-12 sports.

The House voted 67-28 in favor while the Senate approved the veto override by a 32-15 margin.

Republicans say the idea behind House Bill 1041 is to ensure biological girls and young women are not edged out in K-12 sports.

The votes came despite a protest at the Statehouse before the legislature reconvened for what is known as Technical Corrections Day.

The Indiana ACLU says the ban violates Title IX by discriminating against people based on their gender identity.

The organization has filed a lawsuit to prevent the ban from taking effect on July 1st.
