Glenn Nathaniel Canfield

Glenn Nathaniel Canfield age 94 went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 26, 2022.

Glenn was born July 6, 1928, to Rev. Royal and Anna (Meyer) Canfield in Delaware, Indiana. Glenn started school in a one-room schoolhouse. He liked to talk about listening to all eight grades. He graduated from Monroe City High School in Monroe City, Indiana

Glenn served in the U. S. Navy from 1948 to 1952, being stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois and then in Green Cove Springs, Florida. He served aboard the U.S.S. Watts, a Navy destroyer. He then worked at Monsanto Chemical Company for 37 ½ years before retiring in 1989. After retirement, Glenn worked at the mini golf course and driving range behind the old Frisch’s restaurant in Lawrenceburg, which he enjoyed very much.

In 1967 Glenn accepted Christ as his Savior and became a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Aurora, now known as Life Church. In 1968 he left Monsanto for a short time and attended Toccoa Falls Bible College in Georgia planning to become a minister. It was there he met Betty Simpson who became his wife on May 10, 1969. Glenn and Betty had one son, David born August 5, 1971. Their wonderful son, David, passed away suddenly in 2019.

In his younger years, Glenn enjoyed squirrel hunting. He also liked feeding the birds and squirrels which brought him some good laughs. When Glenn was 50 years old, he started bowling and playing golf. He fell in love with both sports and continued to do both until having back surgery in 2006 prevented him from being able to continue participating in those activities. Glenn also enjoyed reading western novels, watching old western movies and game shows, playing table games, and traveling. Glenn, Betty, and David enjoyed traveling and had been in almost every state. In 1995 Glenn went on a bus tour for 20 days traveling all over Alaska, which was a dream come true. He walked on a large glacier and even flew to the Arctic Circle on a mail plane.

Glenn was never a grandfather, but the neighborhood kids (Ethan and Allison) called him Grandpa. They would sit with him in the swing and entertain him along with their two dogs, Bell and Cricket. Glenn and Bell had a love affair.

Glenn loved the Lord and his church family very much. He served in many different capacities over the years. He served as an Elder, Church Treasurer, Trustee, he taught Sunday School, sang solos, and led the congregation in singing for many years. He was faithful in everything he did.

Glenn was given a lifetime honor for service to his country having served in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1952. He was also presented with a “Quilt of Valor” at Life Church in Aurora on January 19, 2020. The quilt was presented by Sheila Stevenson from Rivertown Quilters and Vietnam veteran P.G. Gentrup.

Glenn was a very down to earth and kind person. He was a wonderful father and husband. After retiring, each morning he would take David for a ride to Wal Mart whether he had a reason to go or not.

Glenn was very much loved and will be dearly missed by his wife, Betty of 53 years.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Betty, nephew Noel Houze, Sr. of Aurora, his great nephews, Tim (Anita) Dyer of Moores Hill, Indiana, Lynn (Kelly) Dyer of Dillsboro, Indiana and Noel (Susan) Houze of Milan, Indiana, his great nieces Debbie (Greg) Kleinholz, of St. Robert, Missouri, Cindy Houze (partner Rick Lane) of Dillsboro, Indiana, and Bonita (Richard) Palmer of Cincinnati, Ohio, sister-in-law Lois Bortmas of Cortland, Ohio and many other friends and relatives.
