(Metamora, IN) – The historic Metamora community and Franklin County elected officials are launching a coordinated effort to ensure the beloved canal town not only survives but thrives for generations.

Franklin County government, in cooperation with Metamora, plans to apply for a planning grant in November through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) that will specifically concentrate on storm water and sewer-related issues.

Officials say this initiative will help identify critical infrastructure improvements to support the town’s long-term sustainability.

“This partnership represents a turning point for Metamora,” said Alan Stenger, President of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and the community group I Love Metamora. “Our goal is to preserve the town’s unique history while attracting new visitors, businesses, and opportunities. Together we can secure a strong future for our families and for everyone who loves this special place.”

Residents and others are encouraged to attend a public meeting next Monday, September 29 at 6 p.m. at Third Place in Metamora.

Participants can also complete a survey available online through a QR code and in paper form.

Also, Metamora Canal Days 2025 will be held October 3–5. The three-day autumn festival is the busiest weekend of the year in town, and draws visitors from across the region.

Organizers plan to promote the survey heavily during Canal Days to maximize public input.

“This is about the entire county coming together to preserve our heritage and create a sustainable economic future,” Stenger added. “We invite everyone to participate in shaping the next chapter of Metamora’s story.”
