State budget and road funding bill signed into law

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Governor Eric Holcomb signed into law a balanced budget and new infrastructure funding yesterday.

The biennial budget and state’s transportation funding plan gained final legislative approval late last week.

The transportation funding plan does include a 10 cent per gallon tax increase on both gasoline and diesel fuel.

Lawmakers say that on average you will only $6 per month increase per vehicle.

New registration fees will be added as well. Most vehicles will see a $15 fee, electric cars will have a $150 fee, while hybrid vehicles will have a $75 fee.

These fees will go to the county to improve county roads.

There is also a provision in the legislation that would allow lawmakers to create toll roads, but they would have to be approved by the state budget committee first.

That’s State Representative Randy Frye.

The state budget funds several priorities outlined in Governor Holcomb’s Next Level legislative agenda in January, including incentives to increase the amount of venture capital in the state, regional economic development, pre-K expansion, pay increases for law enforcement officers and more.
