The Cincinnati Reds beat the Athletics 6-5 at Great American Ball Park to complete the three-game series sweep as heard yesterday on WRBI. Andrew Abbott won for the sixth time this year. He tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Brock Burke notched his second save of the year. Elly De La Cruz, Sal Stewart, Tyler Stephenson and JJ Bleday all hit solo home runs to lead the Reds offense. Cincinnati ends the homestand at 7 and 3. The Reds begin a two-city, six-game road trip tonight with the first of three in our nation’s capital against the Washington Nationals. Coverage begins at 6:15 on 103.9 FM.
The Reds on Thursday claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates righthanded pitcher Ron Marinaccio; claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays righthanded pitcher Chase Solesky and option him to Triple-A Louisville; and transferred outfielder Blake Dunn (right elbow sprain) to the 60-day Injured List.
The Reds have also transferred the rehab assignment of lefthanded pitcher Brandon Williamson from Double-A Chattanooga to Louisville. Williamson has been on the Injured List since late April with left shoulder fatigue.
It was the Las Vegas Aces over the Indiana Fever 86-84 in overtime in WNBA action last night in downtown Indianapolis. Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points. Aliyah Boston added a double double: 21 points and 12 rebounds. And Caitlin Clark tossed in 20 points. With the loss, the Fever drops to 19-12. They’ll be back in action tomorrow at Chicago.
The Fever’s Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark and coach Stephanie White have been selected to represent USA Basketball at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany from September 4 through 13.
Another honor for Stephanie White. She’s the WNBA Coach of the Month. Indiana went 8 and 2 in July.
Running back Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts have shaken hands on a two-year contract extension worth $44 million. The deal includes $39 million guaranteed and incentives that could push the value to $47 million. Taylor, who was entering the final year of his contract, signed an extension with the Colts in 2023.
Cincinnati Bengals tight end Josh Kattus has passed a physical and is cleared to practice. Kattus had been on the Active/Non-Football Injury list since July 25. He was placed on that list with an undisclosed injury.
The NFL preseason kicked off last night with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. It was the Carolina Panthers over the Arizona Cardinals 33-30.
