The community of Versailles lost a very familiar, smiling face Saturday morning, August 20. Donald Wayne Wood, 72 years old and known as Donnie, passed away surrounded by his family and friends. Donnie was born in Switzerland County, the son of Stewart and Edith Wood, on July 7, 1944. He was one of 15 children blessed to this union and had a good childhood playing with his brothers and sisters.
After attending school, Donnie was enrolled in the United States Army on June 16, 1965 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era. Donnie returned to his native roots and took on many different odd jobs. He met his future wife Barbara Canada, and they were united in marriage on December 4, 1965. To this marriage was born a daughter Kathy. Donnie always believed in working and providing for his family. He spent many years working for and becoming town supervisor in Osgood. He then decided to venture out on his own to form the Don Wood Seamless Gutter business. Many houses in the area still proudly have their Don Wood Gutters hanging.
Anybody that knew Donnie knew his smile was contagious. He truly loved to make those around him happy even if they were the root of his favorite joke or prank he was working up. Donnie was passionate about his family and never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, woodworking, and decorating his yard at Christmas for others to enjoy. He was faithful to his music, loved to sing and pick his guitar, and even created 3 discs of his favorites.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents and many brothers and sisters. He is survived by wife Barbara at home; daughter Kathy Berry of Versailles; grandkids Scott Berry of Osgood, Melinda Berry of Versailles, and Melanie (Nathan) Meisberger of Versailles; great-granddaughter Korrin; and sister Norma Scheonhoft of Florida.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 23 from 4-7 p.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home for all family and friends to share their favorite story. Funeral services will also be at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Cliff Hill in Versailles.
Memorials may be made to the Fisher House of Cincinnati, in care of the funeral home.
