Consultant recommends FC Schools close two buildings in money-saving effort

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IN — A consultant informed the Franklin County School Board last week that the school corporation could save nearly $1 million or more by closing one or both elementary buildings that are not on the main campus in Brookville.

Lancer and Beebe LLC was hired to report on the condition of school buildings and facilities in the corporation, and the firm’s senior partner said Franklin County buildings are well maintained.

But Terry Lancer said both Laurel and Mount Carmel are well below 50 percent of student capacity, with classrooms either sitting empty or used for storage.

Lancer said closing one of the buildings would save up to $800,000 a year, and shuttering both buildings would save $1.5 million annually.

The school board took Lancer and Beebe’s report under advisement.
