(Dearborn County, IN) – One man is dead and another in custody following a death investigation and manhunt in southern Dearborn County on Thursday morning.
The Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office says it was around 5:41 a.m. when deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 50 near Campo Verde Drive and Gilday Drive in Dillsboro after a caller reported hearing gunshots. The caller also reported a blue vehicle heading east on 50 and that one of the occupants did not look good.
A second caller reported a blue SUV pulled down Texas Gas Road and two people in the vehicle – one of whom was lying down in a seat.
At around 5:55 a.m., a Dearborn County deputy spotted a vehicle stopped in the roadway on Hueseman Road. The deputy approached the vehicle, which was a bright blue SUV, and after a brief interaction with the driver, the man fled in the vehicle.
Several other law enforcement officers headed to the area but they lost sight of the vehicle for a short time.
The blue SUV with Kentucky license plates was located unoccupied around 6:06 a.m., and it had crashed into an embankment near 9750 Hueseman Road. A perimeter was immediately set up near the crash scene.
It was around 7:20 a.m. when a Dearborn County deputy found the body of a man in a wooded area along Texas Gas Road near the intersection with Hueseman.
The victim appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
A search of the area, which included a helicopter, drones and K9 units, led to a temporary closing of Texas Gas Road and prompted the sheriff’s office to advise residents to lock their doors and be vigilant.
A male suspect was seen in a creek and arrested around 11:12 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing, and there is no longer any danger to the public.
The victim’s body was taken to the Hamilton County Morgue in Cincinnati for an autopsy.
