Mark Anthony Harpring

Mark Anthony Harpring, age 54, passed away on May 2, 2025, at University of Cincinnati Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born to Vernon and Diane (nee Williams) Harpring, on October 1, 1970, at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, Indiana.

Mark attended St. Louis Catholic School and Batesville High School before pursuing his undergraduate degree at Butler University and earning his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Kansas.

Mark developed a passion for the Spanish language and culture at a young age. He studied in Mexico and was a missionary in Spain for two years. He spent his entire career as a professor at the University of Puget Sound teaching Spanish literature. During his sabbaticals, Mark spent his time teaching eager students in Mexico. He lived most of his adult life in Seattle, Washington, before moving back to his hometown of Batesville in 2022.

His commitment to others extended far beyond academia. Mark was, quite simply, the person you went to. Whether you needed help with running an errand, a ride to an appointment, your dogs walked, or just a listening ear, he was always there, ready to offer his assistance without hesitation. His kindness knew no bounds.

Mark was particularly proud of his hobby of making rosaries. He loved giving them not just to his close friends and family but was also known to offer a handmade rosary to people he just met.

Mark loved dogs, especially his chihuahua Cowboy. He loved working in his flower garden, cooking with friends and family, and researching his family history. He possessed an extraordinary intellect, a sharp and insightful mind that made conversations with him endlessly engaging.

Mark made Christmas a little more magical every year by donning his red and white and dressing up as Santa Claus. His jolly “Ho ho ho” and the cheerful jingle of his Santa bells will forever echo in our memories.

Family was the cornerstone of Mark’s life, and he could most often be found surrounded by loved ones. He was undeniably the life of the party. The image of Mark will always be etched in our minds with his infectious smile radiating warmth and happiness. Mark loved everyone unconditionally and without judgment. Often found with a shot of vodka and a Marlboro Light in hand, he embraced life with gusto and authenticity.

Mark’s absence will be deeply felt by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, passion, and unwavering support will continue to bloom in the hearts of those he touched.

Mark is survived by his parents, Diane Harpring of Batesville and Vernon Harpring of Batesville; sister Wendy Eisert of Batesville; brothers Todd (Debbie) Harpring and Perry (Shelley) Harpring, both of Batesville; nieces Lexi Eisert, Tracy (Terry) Trent, Kaylee Harpring, Victoria Harpring; nephew Marshall Eisert; and great-nephew Tanner Trent.
