Late surge by South Decatur enough to defeat rival North Decatur in varsity baseball matchup

South Decatur varsity baseball’s 5th inning surge was enough to defeat rival North Decatur on Monday. Colby Rathburn broke the 5-5 tie in the fifth with a one run single.

North Decatur’s offense got going in the first inning, scoring three runs.

The Cougars answered with three runs in the second inning. The big inning for South Decatur came thanks to singles by JP Scudder, Jansen McDonald, and Devin Pate to make it just a 4-3 deficit for the Cougars.

South Decatur would score two in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead over the Chargers.

North Decatur would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5.

The Cougars would go on to score 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, 7-5.

JP Scudder led South Decatur to victory on the hill. Scudder allowed nine hits and two runs over six innings, striking out seven.

Brayden Hancock took the loss for North Decatur. The lefthander surrendered seven runs on 12 hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one.

Avery Seegers started the game for South Decatur. The ace lasted one inning, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one and walking one.

The Chargers and Cougars finished the game with 13 hits each.
