Statehouse — If state lawmakers get their way, those heading to a salon or barber shop may soon be able to get a cut and a beer.

House Bill 1217 is a catch-all for a variety of alcohol-related matters, but one that stands out among the bill’s offerings is the ability for a “beauty culture salon employee” to dispense beer or wine to patrons.

The bill was introduced in January in the Indiana House of Representatives where it went through three readings before passing out of the House by a 94-3 vote.

According to the legislation, beauty salons and barber shops licensed by the state would be permitted to serve wine or beer by glass or bottle to customers who are at least 21 years of age and who are receiving hair care services.

The wine or beer would be required to be consumed on the premises.
