Tip about threat leads to beefed up police presence at North Decatur

DECATUR COUNTY, IN — A tip about a threat made by a former student at North Decatur Jr./Sr. High School led to a stepped-up police presence at the school Thursday

Before school started Thursday, all Decatur County Community School Resource Officers, the Director of Safety, and Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies were present at North Decatur to ensure students and staff were safe.

Decatur County Schools Superintendent Jarrod Burns wrote in a letter to the school corporation community that everyone at North Decatur was safe and went about their normal day.

Dr. Burns also wrote they appreciate the fact that the situation was reported to an administrator so that appropriate actions could be taken.

He added they take all threats seriously and encourage anyone who sees or hears something of concern to report it to a teacher, administrator, non-instructional staff member, or School Resource Officer.

North Decatur Jr./Sr. High was the second Southeastern Indiana school to receive a threat this week; extra police were at Franklin County High School on Wednesday after a threat was reported to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Meantime, school leaders across the state were telling parents there were no specific threats to their schools Friday.

This comes after an anonymous TikTok threat spoke of a day of violence at schools across the country.

However, many school districts said they would have more police officers at or around their buildings Friday as a precaution.
