Sunman Town Board approves ordinance changing municipal election time

Sunman, IN — The Sunman Town Board has passed an ordinance that changes when municipal elections will be held.

Indiana Code 3-10-7-2.9 allows for a town to adopt an ordinance that changes the time municipal elections are held for offices of the town legislative body members and clerk-treasurer.

Under the new ordinance, all three town board members and the clerk-treasurer will be elected next November, followed by an election one year later in 2024 and each even-numbered year thereafter.

Each town board office will be designated with a number.

Town board offices # 1 and #2 will serve a one-year term starting January 1, 2024.

After the 2024 election, those elected to these offices in ’23 will serve four-year terms starting in January 2025.

The person elected to town board office #3 next year will serve a 3-year term until the next election in 2026.

After that, the office will be filled on a four-year basis.

The clerk-treasurer will be elected in 2023 and will serve a three-year term.

Clerk-Treasurer will be back on the ballot in 2026, and the winner will serve a four-year term.

All elections for town offices in Sunman will take place during general elections in November.
