Report Reveals Inmate Suffered Seizures Days Before Death

The Greensburg man that died while serving time in the Decatur County Jail suffered seizures within the first three days of incarceration.

M. Shane Satterfield, 38, passed away March 17 while serving a two week sentence for OWI.

A report released by the Decatur County Coroner reveals Satterfield was exhibiting seizure like symptoms within the first 24 to 36 hours in jail, according to the Greensburg Daily News.

Jail staff contacted a doctor who prescribed him with Benadryl on March 15. Satterfield continued to show signs of erratic behavior and incoherency.

An ambulance was called March 17 and once on the scene emergency personnel called for assistance for cardiac arrest, the newspaper reports. Satterfield was pronounced dead at Decatur County Memorial Hospital that evening.

The coroner’s report indicates that Satterfield died of natural causes from complications of alcohol withdrawal.

His mother, Lynn Brewsaugh, of Greensburg, is planning on filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Department.

Court documents show Brewsaugh claims her son’s death was caused by “was caused by the willful, wanton and/or negligent actions of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department and its officers and agents.”

The coroner is not releasing the autopsy report and toxicology report.
