Oldenburg boys soccer has good second half but falls short

Southwestern Shelby was the home opponent for Oldenburg boys soccer Monday. The Spartans came out on top 5-3. Southwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half. The Twisters fought back, outscoring the Spartans 3-2 in the second half, but just ran out of time.

OA coach Ken Getz said the Twisters were playing shorthanded again as seven varsity players were out sick.

“Not to make an excuse, but we only had 15 healthy players on a very hot and humid night,” said Getz.  “To be down 3-0 at half and battle back and score three in the second half showed me a lot about our team. The boys never gave up and played a great second half.”

“The first half we tried to do to much dribbling and not enough passing and possession,” recalled Getz.  “At half, we talked about giving us a chance on free kicks to put the ball on frame and see what happens. Nick Folop did this numerous times during the second half and he nailed a great shot from about 30 yards out to tally our last goal.”

Edited scoring and stats from OA assistant coach Mike Wilhelm:

Thomas Lohmueller scored in period 2 at 34:59 on a PK for a foul in the box. Henry Wanstrath scored in period 2 at 11:30 assisted by Lohmueller on a shot in the 6. Henry was in the right place at the right time and finished with a goal. Nick Folop scored in period 2 at 2:05 on a restart from about midfield. It was a beautiful line drive going in the upper right over the keeper.

The Twisters had 16 shots with 9 on goal, 8 fouls and 2 corners. Alex Matacia had 5 saves, including the lone PK taken by the Spartans.

The Spartans scored in period 1 at 29:14 in the 6, at 22:12 on a one-touch in the 6 off a corner and at 7:18 from a shot in the 18. They scored in period 2 at 13:04 on another shot inside the 18 and at 4:27 on an assisted shot inside the 18.

Southwestern Shelby had 22 shots with 10 on goal, 18 fouls, 3 corners and 2 yellow cards.

We thank coaches Getz and Wilhelm for the information.
