Greensburg police add bike patrols

Greensburg, Ind. —Police in Greensburg have begun bike patrols to combat crime in alleyways and walking paths in the city. The volunteer program will involve four to six officers and allow access to areas that are not possible for vehicle-based patrols.

The city has purchased three rugged bicycles equipped with lights and sirens. The bikes were purchased from a Columbus retailer at no cost to the taxpayers.

Police chief Brendan Bridges says initially the patrols will target the Charles L. Buell Walking Trails and downtown alleys. Reports of drug abuse and improper disposal of hypodermic needles and burglaries have come from both areas. He says the program will give officers the opportunity for more personal exchanges with the public.

The program has been supported by the Decatur County Community Foundation, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, Walmart and the Decatur County Community Action Coalition.
