County Eyes Four-Way Stop

Stop sign

(Ripley County, IN) — A rural Ripley County intersection could soon become a four-way stop following concerns from motorists and a recent crash near the location.

The Ripley County Highway Department is proposing four-way stop signs at the intersection of County Road 1050 North and County Road 350 West, northwest of Batesville.

County officials say the department has received numerous concerns about the intersection, particularly involving motorists traveling south on County Road 350 West as they approach 1050 North.

The proposal comes weeks after a property-damage crash was reported near the intersection.

Ripley County Sheriff’s Office and Batesville Police Department incident logs both show a property-damage accident was reported at 10483 N. County Road 350 West at 11:20 p.m. July 30. The address places the incident immediately adjacent to the 1050 North intersection.

Officials have not said the July 30 crash prompted the proposed traffic change, and the Highway Department’s notice does not cite a specific crash or traffic study. Instead, the department points to the concerns it has received about the intersection.

The Highway Department says the new stop signs are proposed to be installed two weeks after the Aug. 17 notice, which would put installation around Aug. 31.

Residents with questions, concerns or comments about the proposal can contact the Ripley County Highway Department at 812-689-4720 or email rchwy@ripleycounty.com.

The department is located at 2710 North Hasmer Hill Road in Osgood.
