(Jefferson County, IN) – A man from South Carolina was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing nearly $1 million from an elderly relative who lives in Madison.
The investigation by Detective Tim Denby with the Indiana State Police Special Investigation Section, and Detective Jason Duncan from the ISP Versailles Post began in May of 2024 when a financial institution reported suspicious transactions involving the accounts of an elderly Jefferson County woman.
During the investigation, detectives learned that in 2021, 54-year-old Eric Dyer of Batesburg, South Carolina was named power of attorney/legal guardian over his grandmother, who was a resident of an assisted living center in the Madison area.
A review of bank records indicated that between 2022 and 2024, Dyer allegedly withdrew nearly $1 million from the victim’s bank accounts for his personal use. Investigators also learned that Dyer was behind in paying the victim’s assisted living facility monthly balance.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office for review. As a result, a warrant was recently issued for Dyer for multiple felony counts of Theft, Money Laundering, Corrupt Business Influence, and Neglect of a Dependent, as well as a misdemeanor charge of Elder Abuse.
Dyer was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Madison. He was booked in the Jefferson County Jail and will soon face an initial court appearance.
In addition to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office, ISP detectives were assisted by the Indiana Adult Protective Services.
