(Greensburg, IN) – On Friday, August 15, the Decatur County Health Department proudly hosted the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for its new Community Garden, marking a significant step forward in the county’s commitment to public health, food access, and community engagement.

Located at 315 S. Ireland St., the garden is the result of a strong partnership between local government, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and generous sponsors. The event welcomed residents, community leaders, and supporters who came together to celebrate the garden’s opening and future impact.

The Community Garden initiative is designed to provide fresh, locally grown produce to residents while promoting healthy living, educational opportunities, and environmental stewardship. It will also serve as a space for workshops, volunteer efforts, and school engagement throughout the growing seasons.

“I am very impressed with how the community volunteers and organizations stepped up to create such a tremendous and amazing garden for all to enjoy,” said Decatur County Commissioner Gabriel Nobbe. “The health department has knocked it out of the park on this one! I was very excited to hear plans to expand for next year. Thank you again to everyone who assisted in making this a reality. Your hard work did not go unnoticed.”

“I appreciate all the work and effort that multiple groups have put in to bring the community garden to life this summer. This educational opportunity also provides fresh produce to those who need or lack access to fresh vegetables.” said Mayor Joshua Marsh of Greensburg.

The garden’s development was made possible by the collaboration of several local and regional partners, including:

  • Decatur County Health Department
  • Purdue Extension-Decatur County
  • Greensburg/Decatur County Public Library
  • Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce
  • Greensburg High School Construction Class
  • Decatur County Soil & Water Conservation District
  • Decatur County Community Foundation,
  • Numerous dedicated community volunteers.

“We are incredibly thankful for the many hands that made this vision a reality,” said Sean Durbin, Director of the Decatur County Health Department. “This garden will provide for families, teach valuable life skills, and serve as a beacon of wellness in our county. I want to especially mention, Community Garden Co-Chairs- Alicia Nobbe and Karen Lane as well as Esther Par, Sabrina Gregory and Catherine Niese for their efforts to make this garden a reality.”
