#14 ranked Southwestern Shelby came to the graveyard to face #2 ranked OA. Twsters won 4-1.
‘We always talk about winning the first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes of a half if you do this you will have a real good shot at winning the game. We came out ready and did just that getting two early goals. We set the tone early even though we were outshot for the game we made our chances count. I was pleased with our defense as only one ball found the back of the net. Our shape on defense is getting better every time out. Offensively we would like more shots as we thought we left a few out there that we didn’t take. We need some rain as the field is really hard. We got banged up a little. Floop went out early with a hip pointer. Rocks and Gariott also missed some time but were able to come back into the game. With this said we got some great play out of the boys that were subbed in.’ Twisters Coach Ken Getz.
Stuart Lamping scored in period 1 at 35:58 on a shot off a keeper miss. Stuart scored again in period 1 at 33:05 on a shot off a keeper save / rebound. Lucas McFee scored in period 1 at 13:45 on a PK from a foul on Henry Kraus in the 18. Southwestern scored in period 2 at 34:50 from a pass in the 18 and shot. Drew Kersey scored in period 2 at 13:45 on a 24 yard shot on the keeper who was at the top of the 18. Southwestern had 23 shots with 11 on goal, 11 fouls, 10 corners, 1 hand, 1 yellow card and their keeper had 7 saves. This was a bit of a physical game but well played by OA. The defense stepped up in the second half to swat away 14 of their 15 shots.
OA had 12 shots with 10 on goal, 5 off sides, 16 fouls, 1 yellow card for Drew Kersey, 1 corner, 2 hand balls and Chris Hautman had 10 saves with one very nice push over the top on a rocket shot from outside the 18.
OA traveled to Knightstown on a hot and humid night for a varsity match winning 4-1. We were without five starters and three subs as our seniors were on their Senior retreat. So this was a preview of what next year’s team might look like and they didn’t disappoint us. We actually scored all 5 goals on the game. Some miscommunication between Goalie and the defense. The defense is instructed to clear everything unless told different. We have been stressing that communication is a key to your game. This is still something we have to get better at.
‘Offensively we had a couple first time varsity goals as Max Kirschner and Gariott Scott both scored on head balls both assisted by Lucas McFee off of a corner. What was nice to see was all four of our goals came from an assist. Lucas had a big night with three assists and one goal so he accounted for every score we had. Ben Kraus and Matthew Hoog [Rocks] controlled the midfield as they seemed to be everywhere on the night. We took 21 players and all 21 got in the game with at least 15 minutes of playing time.’ Twisters Coach Ken Getz.
Max Kirschner scored in period 1 at 30:21 assisted by Lucas McFee on a header off a corner. Gariott Scott scored in period 1 at 4:55 assisted by Lucas McFee on a shot off a corner. Lucas McFee scored in period 2 at 33:12 assisted by Mathew Hoog on a pass to the 18 and shot. Ben Kraus scored in period 2 at 12:08 assisted by Lucas McFee on a head off a corner. Knightstown scored in period 2 at 27:55 on an OA own goal headed by Adam Huber over Chris Hautman.
A lot of nice passing and teamwork, especially in the second half. Henry Kraus was on the receiving end of a couple ‘fouls’ during the game which included a pounding near the end of the game from the keeper who may have been 3 times his size.
High School Soccer was back at the graveyard after a year off refurbishing the field and Lawrenceburg was the opponent. Lawrenceburg came in with a pre-season ranking of #3 in the state in 2A with OA #4 in the state in 1A. Both teams lived up to their billing as it was a classic back and forth game. I know the score was 0-0 but the game was action packed with scoring opportunities from both schools. Neither defense gave in despite the high pressure that was put on by both offenses on the night.
‘We had to rebuild our defense from a year ago with only one returning starter from last year. So I was very pleased overall with their play anytime you can get a shutout you have to be happy. Along with a lot of new faces in the back we are running a different formation also. So still learning as a team what everybody’s responsibilities are. We are young in two critical parts of our defense Central back and keeper. Adam Huber Sophomore central back and Freshman Chris Hautman at keeper first varsity start for both. The future is bright with these two. Ben Abrams came in and gave us great minutes at defensive back. Yes Ben is a senior but again a youngster in the back line. Ben has only played on the offensive side of the field in the past. Three weeks ago we discovered Ben can play defense. Offensively we had some chances Nate Folop had a couple good looks that he normally finishes. A couple great saves from their keeper kept us off the board. Lucas McFee made great run late in the first half that we all wish we had back and could do over.’ Twisters Coach Ken Getz.
I have been asked what our strengths will be this year I have said our depth. Last night we didn’t miss a beat when we subbed. Coach Getz.
