Rising Sun took both ends of a baseball/softball doubleheader at South Ripley last evening, after formal dedication ceremonies were held to celebrate completion of the renovation project at Forest G. Waters Field. It was the Shiners over the Raiders 6-2 in the baseball game, followed by Rising Sun 13, South Ripley 0 in six innings in softball.

Batesville topped Milan 15-5 in JV baseball. Eli Doll drove in five runs on four hits to lead the Bulldogs.

In middle school track and field, the St. Louis boys came in 2nd in a four-way meet at Switzerland County. It was the Pacers with 99 points; the Cardinals 42; Jac-Cen-Del 34, and Carroll County 6. Switzerland County also took the girls meet with 91 1/2 points. JCD had 48 1/2; St. Louis 43 and Carroll County 1.

Blake Davis has been named girls’ varsity basketball coach at Milan High School. Davis’ hiring was approved by the Milan School Board this week. He succeeds Karissa Voss, who resigned as both girls’ basketball coach and JV volleyball coach last month. Meanwhile, Matt Pickerill has stepped down as Milan boys’ varsity basketball coach. Pickerill led the Indians program for the past four seasons. School leaders have started interviewing candidates to fill the vacancy.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is considering implementing a 35-second shot clock for varsity basketball games by the 2028-29 season. The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association presented the proposal, which was discussed during the IHSAA Executive Committee meeting. Thirty-two states have adopted shot clock rules for high school basketball games.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 in yesterday’s series finale in St. Petersburg as heard on WRBI. Brandon Williamson gave up five earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts, and was pinned with the loss. Former Red Nick Martinez gave up a run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over eight innings to get the win. The Reds only run came on a P.J. Higgins sacrifice fly in the 5th inning. The loss snaps the Reds five game winning streak but they still went 5-1 on the two-city road trip. The Reds have the day off before starting a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Detroit Tigers tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, the team will welcome back fan favorite and 2026 Reds Hall of Fame inductee Brandon Phillips, who will sign a ceremonial one-day contract and officially retire as a Red on Saturday. Phillips spent 11 seasons in Cincinnati from 2006-16, earning three All-Star selections, four Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger Award. He’ll be inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame on Saturday, along with Aaron Harang, Reggie Sanders and Lou Piniella.

The NFL Draft starts tonight in Pittsburgh. Heisman Trophy winner, college football national champion, and former Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza is expected to be the #1 overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders. The Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts do not have any first round selections. After dealing the 10th overall choice to the New York Giants in the Dexter Lawrence trade, the Bengals will make their first pick in the second round at #41, while the Colts will choose at #47.
