Several contested races dot local ballots

Southeastern IN — It is Election Day, and there are a few contested races for local offices.

In Ripley County, voters in Shelby Township will elect a trustee; four candidates are vying for three spots on the Jackson Township Board; two candidates are running for Versailles Clerk-Treasurer, and there are contested races for the South Ripley School Board in districts 1,2,4, and 5, and one race for the Sunman-Dearborn School Board.

In Franklin County, the District 4 County Council seat is up for grabs; nine candidates are vying for three at-large seats on the Franklin County School Board; voters in the Town of Brookville will decide whether to increase the number of town council members from five to seven, and there are contested township trustee races in Brookville, Laurel, and Posey townships.

In Decatur County, the race for Sheriff has garnered a lot of attention; the County Council District 1 seat is being contested, as is the race for Washington Township Trustee; township board races in Adams, Sandcreek, and Washington townships are contested, and three candidates are running for two at-large seats on St. Paul Town Council.

Republican Jennifer Meltzer and Democrat Mimi Pruett are facing off in the Indiana House District 73 race.

Also, the Indiana Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Auditor are also being elected today.

In the newly drawn 9th Congressional District – which covers all of Southeastern Indiana following redistricting – voters will decide whether Republican Erin Houchin or Democrat Matt Fyfe will replace incumbent Trey Hollingsworth in the House of Representatives.

Hollingsworth did not run for reelection.

And Republican incumbent Todd Young goes up against Democrat Thomas McDermott for one of Indiana’s US Senate seats.
