Purdue basketball fans have a lot to cheer about as Purdue’s Braden Smith has been named to the Associated Press First-Team All-America squad, joining an elite group of players from across the country.
Smith, the Boilermakers’ floor general, is coming off a standout season, stepping into a bigger role following the departure of Zach Edey to the NBA. Now, he and his Purdue teammates are eyeing redemption after last season’s NCAA Tournament heartbreak, hoping to make another deep run toward the national championship.
Smith is joined on the first team by Auburn’s Johni Broome, Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Alabama’s Mark Sears, and Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. Broome, a fifth-year senior, has been a dominant force for Auburn, while Flagg, a freshman sensation, has lived up to the hype at Duke. Both players were unanimous selections.
For Smith, the recognition is a testament to his growth as a player and leader. The Westfield, Indiana native has been instrumental in keeping Purdue at the top of the Big Ten and among the best teams in the nation.
Big Ten Representation
Smith isn’t the only familiar name with area ties. Trey Kaufman-Renn, a forward for Purdue, received honorable mention honors. The Silver Creek High School standout continues to be a key contributor for the Boilermakers, adding depth and experience to their frontcourt.
Wisconsin’s John Tonje, a Missouri transfer, earned second-team All-America honors after a breakout season with the Badgers. Meanwhile, Chucky Hepburn of Louisville was among those receiving honorable mention recognition.
March Madness on the Horizon
With the NCAA Tournament set to tip off, all eyes are on Purdue as they look to make a statement. After falling to UConn in last year’s championship game, the Boilermakers are hungry for a title.
Can Smith and his team bring a championship back to Indiana? The road won’t be easy, but if this season has shown anything, it’s that Purdue has what it takes to compete with the best.
