Phone scam targeting area seniors

Southeastern IN — Elderly residents around Southeastern Indiana have been the target of a phone scam requesting money.

Authorities say the callers identify themselves as “Federal Agents” and “CIA,” and claim that the Social Security number and bank accounts of the victim have been compromised and shut down due to criminal activity.

The callers then demand a large amount of money payable to them as a fine and to restore the social security number. They also request confirmation of the social security number and other personal information.

Law enforcement says the callers use phone numbers that cannot be tracked. Police say the best advice is to hang up and NOT give out any personal information over the phone. Local, state, and federal law enforcement will not ask for social security numbers or request money over the phone.

If you or a loved one has received one of these calls, you’re urged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
