SOUTHEASTERN IN — Strong winds overnight caused power outages which left thousands in the dark around Southeastern Indiana.

Delaware Road in Batesville from County Road 1400 North to Mollenkramer Road had to be shut down due to a downed live power line and utility pole damage caused by the wind.

Batesville Police told motorists to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

There were also road hazards and fallen trees on Western Avenue, on State Road 46 just west of Tekulve, Bedel Boulevard, and on the entrance ramp to westbound I-74.

Fire departments throughout Franklin County  – such as Brookville, Blooming Grove, Metamora, New Trenton, and other locations – were called out overnight to deal with downed trees and power lines blocking roads.

Similar wind-related damage calls came in throughout Ripley and Decatur counties.

Road hazards were reported in Ripley County on US 421 and County Road 700 North and State Road 48  in Osgood; State Road 129 in both Versailles and Cross Plains; at the intersection of state roads 129 and 350 in Delaware; and on North Marion Street in Holton.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office responded to at least a dozen reports of road hazards such as downed trees, utility poles, and wires.

The National Weather Service received wind reports throughout the night. Observers clocked wind speeds of 51 mph in Versailles, plus 47 mph in Batesville, and 1.2 miles east of Versailles.

Crews from Southeastern Indiana REMC, Decatur County REMC, and Duke Energy were dealing with numerous power outages in their respective local service areas.
