National Police Week

Batesville, Ind. — This week is National Police Week. President John F. Kennedy started the tradition in May 1962. This week thousands of peace officers and their families are expected to travel to Washington D.C. to participate in a variety of events.

So far in 2017, 48 officers and six canine officers have been killed in the line of duty. None of those fatalities have occurred in Indiana.

A report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation says there are more than 900,000 sworn police officers in the nation. The same report says since 2015 violent crime has increased by more than five percent.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has directed all flags to be flown at half-staff today in honor of Peace Officer Memorial Day.
