(Greensburg, IN) – The public had a chance to voice opinions on the proposed Decatur County food and beverage tax at Monday night’s hearing at the Annex (the former Washington Elementary School on South Ireland Street in Greensburg).

Revenue generated by the proposed one-percent tax on commercially prepared food and beverages would help fund the construction of an aquatics center on the site of Allen Memorial Pool.

An overwhelming number of people spoke out against the project, saying – among other things – that they pay enough taxes and shouldn’t have to pay for “a luxury.”

Giving the community an attraction, and a place for the kids to go in the summer were among the reasons those in favor voiced support for the tax.

As for the next step in the process, Decatur County Council is expected to revisit the matter at its November 21 meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Annex.
