(Statehouse) – State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg, pictured front left) joined Gov. Eric Holcomb when he ceremonially signed Senate Enrolled Act 167 into law at the Statehouse Wednesday, May 24.

Effective on July 1, the law will require Indiana students, with exceptions, to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during their senior year of high school.

“Last year, $69 million in financial aid was unclaimed by Indiana students because they did not file the FAFSA,” Leising said. “I have been a strong advocate for this bill language for many years, so I am pleased to see it signed into law. It will be a large step in helping our students consider their post-secondary opportunities.”

Also present for the bill signing was Indiana Commission for Higher Education Commissioner and Batesville resident Chris Lowery (pictured second row, standing behind Leising).

Leising was also on hand this week when the Governor ceremonially signed other bills she either authored or sponsored:

  • Senate Enrolled Act 4 was authored by Leising and increases the quality of services performed by Indiana’s local health departments and promotes collaboration between local health departments and the Indiana Department of Health.
  • House Enrolled Act 1568, which was sponsored by Leising, allows pharmacists who meet certain requirements to prescribe and dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives to support women in raising healthy families when they are ready.
