Jim’s Journal, January 19th, 2024

With wintry weather early today disrupting a lot of school districts’ plans, ours have been changed up a bit as well.

Here’s what we know, and we will let you know if we learn more.  Tonight’s scheduled high school basketball games NOT being played are boys’ contests, including Batesville at Franklin County, and Ross of Ohio at East Central.  Those that we know have been rescheduled are Morristown at North Decatur, which will now be played Monday, the 22nd, Scottsburg at South Decatur, now set for the 6th of February, and Milan-South Ripley has been moved to tomorrow, Saturday, with the JV game at 2:00, followed by Homecoming activities, then the varsity contest.  We won’t be broadcasting a game tonight.

As of this afternoon (Friday), we haven’t been told anything about games originally scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday the 20th.  So we’re presuming they’re all being played, and we’re still planning to bring you a double-header, with a little time to drive in between the games.  First, early in the afternoon, we’ll have the Batesville girls visiting Greensburg, that one scheduled to tip off at 1:30, so we’ll plan to bring you pregame coverage starting around 1:15.  Then tomorrow night, back in Batesville, the Bulldog boys will host Connersville with tipoff scheduled for 7:30, and we’ll hit the air about 7:15. I’ll be there for both, with a couple brand-new color analysts, and a whole lot of hoops for you, all on 103.9 FM, here at WRBIRadio.com, and on the new WRBI app.

As far as the community’s younger athletes, the stars of tomorrow, Batesville’s high school junior varsity Bulldog girls beat Rushville this week…  and for girls at the middle school level, Rushville knocked off the Batesville 7th-graders, while the 8th-grade Bulldogs beat Rushville by 22 points.

Big high school swim action at Milan’s senior night had the Indian boys dominating on the strength of Dylan Thomas’ multi-event wins in the butterfly, breaststroke, and on the 200 medley relay.  Milan won the boys’ meet with 125 points, and second place among the 4 teams was way back at 77.  In the girls’ meet, Batesville won it with 97 points, and Southwestern Hanover took second at 79.

Most of our men’s college basketball teams hit the courts tomorrow, but one game of note is tonight,  when the Hoosier men of IU visit Number 11 Wisconsin.

And coming off a 126-121 win over the Kings last night, the Pacers stay out on the west coast tonight, tipping off late again with a visit to the TrailBlazers in Portland.

The high school hoops scores from Thursday night are in, as the girls’ regular season winds down with sectional draws set for this weekend.

Our game on WRBI was interesting, as the Batesville girls jumped out to an early 16 to 2 lead, but got reeled in by Rushville to where the teams were actually tied a couple times…  but in the second half Batesville re-established itself, moving ahead to stay.  The final, Bulldogs 54, Lions 36.  Rushville next faces Connersville Saturday, while Batesville takes on highly-ranked Greensburg.

Other girls’ scores last night included Franklin County topping Shenandoah 49 to 37, North Decatur beating Milan 50 to 36, Jac-Cen-Del over Rising Sun 58-39, and an overtime thriller, Southwestern (Hanover) just edging South Ripley 50 to 48.

The boys’ game from Wednesday night that got suspended after a fan in the crowd fell ill and had to be cared for by paramedics, will get finished up early next week.  South Dearborn officials tell us things will pick up right where they left off, Tuesday evening the 23rd, at 6:00.  There’ll be 5 minutes 53 seconds left on the clock, the Knights leading 56 to 41, and East Central will be inbounding the ball.  We’ll cover the conclusion of that contest for you live, since we were also there the first time, beginning around 5:45 Tuesday.  Later, at our usual time of 7:15, we’ll go to our regularly scheduled game for that evening, with the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles visiting the Raiders of South Ripley.  And the folks at South Dearborn told us Thursday the woman who’d had the health issue in the stands was doing well.  Thanks to everyone there who jumped into action, including an athletic trainer who began CPR.

Middle school contests Thursday had Rushville’s 7th grade girls beating Batesville, and Jac-Cen-Del’s 8th grade boys topping Greendale of Lawrenceburg.

In the NBA, it was a late one out on the west coast, as the Pacers got by the Sacramento Kings last night, 126 to 121.
