Indiana Senate considering tracking device bills

Statehouse — Some Indiana lawmakers are seeking to clamp down on tracking devices being used to follow someone without their knowledge – a problem that’s come under scrutiny since the technology rolled out.

Three Republicans have introduced separate but nearly identical bills in the state Senate that would make placing a tracking device on a person or their property without their knowledge a Class C misdemeanor.

All three bills introduced in the Senate would heighten the punishment from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor for a person alleged to be unlawfully tracking someone if the accused has a protective order against them.

The bills allow for certain exceptions, such as a family member who wishes to place a device on a vulnerable relative who’s at risk of wandering or going missing or who has a medical condition.
