(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg Community Schools is reorganizing its leadership team. The school board voted Monday to name two assistant superintendents — one focused on operations, the other on curriculum — in a move meant to spread responsibility and prepare the district for whenever longtime superintendent Tom Hunter eventually steps down.

The board approved the changes at its June 9 meeting. Greensburg Junior High Principal Matt Clifford will become Assistant Superintendent over business and operational functions. Tammy Williams, currently Director of Curriculum, will take on the same title while continuing to lead curriculum, instruction, assessment, grant writing, and academic programs.

Both will report directly to Hunter.

What’s Changing

Matt Clifford

Formerly: Greensburg Junior High Principal

New title: Assistant Superintendent

Overseeing HR, transportation, food services, compliance, and personnel administration.

Tammy Williams

Formerly: Director of Curriculum

New title: Assistant Superintendent

Continuing responsibilities in curriculum, instruction, assessment, grant writing, and academic programming.

Hunter has led Greensburg Community Schools since 1999 — a run of more than 25 years. He began his teaching career in 1981. The board made clear that no retirement timeline has been set, but said it wants the district’s leadership structure ready for whatever comes next.

The restructuring is also a response to how much more complicated running a school district has become. Board officials cited growth in state and federal reporting, personnel administration, regulatory compliance, school finance, student support services, and day-to-day operations over the past two decades.

“Public education today is far more complex than it was twenty years ago. The Board believes this leadership structure positions Greensburg Community Schools to continue providing outstanding educational opportunities while ensuring the district’s operational responsibilities receive the attention and expertise they require.”

— Emily McNulty, Board President

The goal, the board said, is for Hunter to stay focused on district-wide leadership, strategic planning, community engagement, and student success — while Clifford and Williams handle the specialized work in their areas.

The board also addressed the eventual superintendent search directly. When a vacancy does occur, it pledged to conduct an open and transparent process — with a formal search and a full board vote before any appointment is made.

“The responsibility of the Board is to make decisions that serve the long-term interests of our students, staff, and community. This restructuring is about strengthening the district today while ensuring Greensburg Community Schools remain well-positioned for continued success in the years ahead.”

— Emily McNulty, Board President

The changes take effect immediately following the June 9 board action.
