Bulldogs Take Two Of Three In The Bluegrass State

The Batesville Bulldogs Varsity Baseball team traveled to Kentucky over the Weekend to participate in the annual Doc Morris Invitational. All three games reported below were played at Beechwood High School. We played The Boone County Rebels and The Ryle Raiders on Friday, and then we played the host Tigers on Saturday morning.

With Habig On The Mound, Bulldogs Shuts Out Boone County

Will Habig didn’t allow a single run against Boone County, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory on Friday.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Habig struck out five, while Huder sat down two.

Batesville got things started in the second inning when Max Baumer doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

A single by Duncan in the fifth inning was a positive for Boone County.

Habig led Batesville to victory on the pitcher’s mound. The right-hander lasted seven innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out five.

Hyder took the loss for Boone County. He went six innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.

Baumer and Chris Lewis all had one hit to lead the Bulldogs. Batesville was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Baumer had the most chances in the field with six.

The win takes the Bulldogs to a 5-3 record overall.

Sherwood’s Walk-Off Picture Perfect Ending In Bulldogs’s Victory Over Ryle

Batesville took Friday’s game in dramatic fashion, with a 6-5 walk-off victory over Ryle. The game was tied at five with the Bulldogs batting in the bottom of the tenth when Calvin Sherwood singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.

A four-run lead in the fifth inning was just enough for Batesville to hold off Ryle for the victory. Ryle scored four runs in the failed comeback on a walk by Sawyer and an error.

Batesville got things started in the second inning when an error scored one run for Bulldogs.

In the top of the seventh inning, Ryle tied things up at five. An error on a fly ball with two outs scored the game-tying three runs for Ryle to take the game to extra innings.

Travis Lecher led the Bulldogs to victory on the pitcher’s mound. The righthander went one inning, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out two and walking zero. Sherwood threw two and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Cade Bauer took the loss for Ryle. The hurler surrendered one run on one hit over two and a third innings, striking out three and walking one.

Wilte started the game for Ryle. The bulldog allowed four hits and three runs over two innings, striking out one. Trey Peters was impressive, as he started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs.  Peters surrendered four runs on six hits over six and two-thirds innings, striking out four.

Sherwood went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs in hits.

Ryle collected seven hits on the day. Nathan Reed and Jacob Stone each had multiple hits for Ryle.

The win takes the Bulldogs overall record to 6-3.

Beechwood Runs Away With Early Lead In Victory

Batesville looked to go undefeated for the first time in the Doc Morris Invitational against the #1 ranked team in Kentucky, Beechwood. However, the Bulldogs watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in an 11-7 loss to Beechwood on Saturday. Beechwood scored on a groundout by Holladay and a grand slam by Roseburrough in the second inning.

Batesville collected ten hits and Beechwood had nine in the high-scoring affair.

Batesville, who left 14 runners on base, scored four runs in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs’ big bats in the inning were led by a single by Trey Peters and a double by Calvin Sherwood.

Feiger was credited with the victory for Beechwood. The ace lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out three. Dille and Holladay entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Holladay recorded the last out to earn the save for Beechwood.

Riley Zink took the loss for the Bulldogs. The righty surrendered six runs on six hits over four innings, striking out two.

The Bulldogs racked up ten hits on the day. Sherwood, Peters, Sam Voegele, and Travis Lecher all managed multiple hits for Batesville.  

Norris led Beechwood with two hits in two at-bats.

The loss takes the Bulldogs record to 6-4, overall. The Bulldogs look to get back to the winning column in a conference matchup against #8 ranked in 3A Franklin County on Monday. The Bulldogs current EIAC record is 2-2.
