Statewide — Mike Braun has ended speculation on whether he’ll run for a second term in the US Senate, or put in his bid to become Indiana’s chief executive.
The U.S. Senator filed paperwork Wednesday signaling his intent to run for Governor.
Braun’s move to run for Governor opens up one of Indiana’s Senate seats in 2024.
In a statement from Josh Kelly, Braun’s chief of staff and political advisor, he said, “Mike Braun has filed his paperwork to run for governor and will be making an official announcement of his candidacy very soon.”
Braun won Indiana’s senate race in 2018, beating incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly in the general election.
A Jasper native and graduate of Jasper High School, Braun rose to prominence as a businessman but entered the political arena on the state level as a representative for Indiana District 63, serving from 2014 to 2017.
He then focused on the 2018 race for the Senate, defeating Todd Rokita and Luke Messer in the primary before going on to beat Donnelly.
Braun is looking to succeed fellow Republican Eric Holcomb as Governor.
Holcomb is in his second term and is prohibited from running for re-election because of term limits.
