BMS wins crosstown volleyball matches against St. Louis

Batesville’s junior high beat St. Louis Tuesday in a pair of volleyball matches.

At Batesville Middle School, the Bulldog seventh topped St. Louis 25-21, 25-9.  Coach Angie Ehrman said, “The front row had solid hitting. Sydney Campbell and Brooke Wilhelm had two kills each. Maddie Haskamp, Claire Niese and Ella King all had one kill. Serving was led by Caitlyn Fox with 10 points. Maddie Haskamp and Ella King had six points each. Ella Weber added five points while Brooke Wilhelm pitched in four. The team is now 7-0.”

“While we didn’t come home with any wins, we did fight hard,” said St. Louis coach Erin Trenkamp. “Serving points for our seventh grade were Olivia Lesing with seven and one ace, Campbell Miles with three and both Ava Hollins and Madi Dierckman with one each.  While we fought really hard in game one to come back, we just couldn’t pull it off.  We struggled to take off in our second game and our serves just weren’t there overall.  We did have a handful of plays in the back and front row that were crucial, but just weren’t enough.”

The Batesville eighth grade also improved to 7-0 as they defeated St. Lou in two close sets:  25-23, 25-20.  Coach Shelly Prickel noted the team had some top performers from the service line and at the net to help secure the win.

“Jade Martin scored eight points including three aces. Addison Luers was perfect on all nine of her service attempts earning six points including an ace. Grace Walter and Reesa Zimmerman chipped in with five and four points respectively. Walter was the most aggressive attacker with seven impressive kills. Martin had three good spikes and Briley Broshears had two good attacks late in the set. Macy Young provided a spark with a well-placed spike down the line.”

Cardinal coach Trenkamp said, “Serving for us were Cora Roth with eight points and four aces, Felicity Brelage with six points and one ace, Rachel Suttmann with five points and three aces, Sophia Hohenstein with a point and ace each, and both Bridget Lohmueller and Ashley Hunter had one point.  This team fought back in both games to give Batesville a run.  We had some really great front row plays that changed the swing of play.  Our serve receive was a downfall at the start of each game, but we did find it midway.  Overall, it was the best game I have seen these ladies play to date mentally.”
