On December 15th, shortly after 7:00 pm, an Aurora man was arrested following a five hour standoff where a shot was fired at officers who arrived at the residence earlier in the day.
The incident began shortly before 2:00 pm when officers from the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department and Aurora Police Department went to a house located at 5789 Dutch Hollow Road to do a welfare check on the occupant of the residence. After arriving at the house, officers learned that the lone occupant, Michael A. Smith, age 32, was wanted on a probation violation warrant through Dearborn County, Indiana.
While attempting to make contact with Smith at the front door of the residence, he fired a shot from a gun in the direction of the officers. The officers then moved back from the house and requested assistance from other police agencies. The Indiana State Police and officers from other nearby police departments responded to the scene.
After a five hour standoff, the Indiana State Police SWAT Team entered the residence and took Smith into custody on the probation violation warrant without further incident. Smith was also found to be in need of medical attention. He was transported to the Dearborn County Hospital and later transferred to the University of Cincinnati Hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing at this time by Indiana State Police Detectives. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office where charges related to this incident may be filed against Smith.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by numerous police agencies in Dearborn County, the Aurora Fire Department, and Dearborn County EMS.
