Area Teams’ Seasons End on Super Stickball Saturday

A trio of area teams bowed out of IHSAA softball and baseball postseason competition on what we at the Sports Voice referred to as “Super Stickball Saturday.”

All three games were heard on 103.9 FM and the WRBI App.

A memorable softball season for the Milan Indians came to an end Saturday at Eagle Park in Nashville, Indiana.  The No. 3 Indians fell to No. 5 West Washington 2-1 in the 1A South Semi-State hosted by Brown County.

The day started with No. 1 Barr-Reeve erasing a 4-run deficit after five innings to defeat No. 2 Indianapolis Lutheran 6-5.

In the second game, the two starting pitchers limited the collective offenses to just one hit.  Layla Manship singled in the second, but her courtesy runner was later picked off at first base on a throw by catcher Mallory Eaglin to first baseman Jillianne Herd.

The Senators took advantage of a Milan miscue in the fourth which led to a pair of unearned runs. Unfortunately, that was the difference in the game.  Macy Lowery led off with a double and took third on a bunt single by Alaina Schmidt.

On the next pitch, Schmidt took off for second and drew a throw.  Lowery immediately broke for home and scored.  The throw to second also sailed high allowing Schmidt to reach third.  She later scored on a sacrifice fly by Manship.  It was now 2-0 W.W.

The Indians got a run back in the fifth.  Nevaeh Carpenter beat out an infield single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Herd.  Carpenter advanced to third on a passed ball then crossed the dish on a dropped fly to left off the bat of Kayleigh Mcintosh.

Milan’s best chance to tie the game came in the sixth.  Emma Voss put down a gutsy bunt single with two strikes then stole second.  The next two batters were retired, and it looked like the third would be as well.  However, an infield pop fly by Mallory Eaglin was dropped putting runners on the corners.  Eaglin moved up a base on defensive indifference with the speedy Voss at third.  But both runners were left stranded as the inning ended on a bunt groundout.

Milan went quietly in the seventh and West Washington celebrated its 22nd win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Milan.

Coach Yatzie Roysden’s club wrapped up the 2026 season at 30-5 which included an ORVC title, an eighth sectional and a third regional championship.

For coach Brittney Powers, her Senators were not done.  West Washington pulled off a bit of a shocker and upended top-ranked Barr Reeve 6-2 in the night game.  This season marked the W.W.’s first-ever regional title and now a first-ever semi-state championship.

The 23-4 Senators from Campbellsburg advance to the IHSAA 1A State Finals on either Friday, June 12 or Saturday, June 13.  The final leg of the tournament will be at Purdue’s Bittinger Stadium.

West Washington will play either No. 10 Riverton Parke (23-8) or No. 8 South Central of Union Mills (21-8).  The North Semi-State title game was postponed to 11 am Monday, June 8 due to rain and thunderstorms.

Hauser defeated North Decatur 13-6 in 10 innings in the Class 1A baseball regional at Jennings County.

The game was tied at 5-5 at the end of the regulation seven innings, and both teams had chances to win it in the 8th and 9th.

But the Jets, aided and abetted by Charger miscues in the outfield, put 8 runs on the board in the top of the 10th inning.

ND scored a run in the bottom of the 10th, but Hauser was able to come up with a game-ending double play at third base.

The Chargers’ Matthew Fields reached base all four times he batted. Fields had two hits and a pair of walks.

Henry Kinker had three hits while Tyler Dean and Wyatt Riesman both collected two singles.

Coach Christian McKinney’s North Decatur team ends the year with a 15-9 mark.

The 19-4 Hauser Jets face 15-14 North Daviess in the first round of the semi-state this Saturday at Mitchell.
