OSGOOD – Community members have organized an event that honors our veterans. Honor Flight the Movie will be shown at the Damm Threatre on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m.
Veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are encouraged to attend the free event and a ticket is not required.
Honor Flight is a documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteer’s race against the clock to fly thousands of veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2005, nearly 60 years after the War.
That film can become a reality for local veterans.
Organizer Lila Neal commented, “This program is just an opportunity to say thank you to them and fly [veterans] to Washington completely free so they can view these great memorials. It’s done in their honor and a little payback for them.”
They are the reason why you and I are living in this wonderful country of ours and have the freedom we’ve got. It’s because of these veterans and all the sacrifices they’ve made in the past and what they continue doing today.”
After the film there will be a Q&A session with a board member of the Indianapolis Honor Flight hub and veterans and their families can learn about upcoming flights and how to get involved. The trip to Washington, DC is completely free for veterans.
Honor Flights are generally for veterans in their 80’s and 90’s and it’s often the first time they’ve been thanked for their service.
“I have always felt, even as a kid, that the veterans never got the thank you that they really deserve,” Neal said.
Neal added she hopes to see as many veterans attend the event as possible.
