(Greensburg, IN) – PowerStream Fiber is taking the next major step in expanding access to high-speed fiber internet as construction begins on Phase 2 of its network.
The expansion is made possible through $7,133,202 in federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) funding, allowing PowerStream Fiber to extend high speed fiber internet service to around 2,800 additional homes and businesses.
PowerStream is a local service from Decatur County REMC delivering to Decatur and Ripley counties.
“Receiving this award is an incredible opportunity, but delivering on that opportunity is our responsibility,” said Brett Abplanalp, CEO of Decatur County REMC. “Our focus now shifts to managing every aspect of the project – from staying on schedule and within budget to ensuring every mile of fiber is built with the same commitment to quality, reliability, and service our members have come to expect.”
The BEAD program is designed to close the digital divide by bringing fiber internet service to underserved rural areas where private investment alone has often been insufficient. Through this investment, more families, farms, and businesses will gain access to the same fast, reliable connectivity that has become essential in today’s world.
Abplanalp says reliable fiber internet is no longer a luxury – it’s essential infrastructure.
“Just as electricity transformed rural communities generations ago, fiber internet is creating new opportunities for the future,” Abplanalp added. “This investment is about much more than internet service. It’s about supporting economic growth, strengthening public safety, expanding educational opportunities, and improving quality of life for the communities we proudly serve.”
PowerStream Fiber completed its Phase 1 construction one year ahead of grant requirements, bringing service to more than 1,400 locations and demonstrating the cooperative’s commitment to delivering projects efficiently and responsibly. That same commitment will guide Phase 2 as construction progresses over the coming months.
As work continues, PowerStream Fiber will provide updates regarding construction activity, service availability, and opportunities for residents to sign up as their areas become eligible for service.
“Our members have trusted Decatur County REMC to deliver reliable electric service for generations,” Abplanalp said. “Today, we’re building on that legacy by delivering the same local service, accountability, and long-term commitment through PowerStream Fiber. We’re excited to continue investing in the future of the communities we call home.”
