(Versailles, IN) – The Ripley County Area Plan Commission tabled a proposed ordinance this week that would regulate first floor dwellings in commercial or mixed-use areas in the towns of Milan, Osgood and Versailles.
The plan calls for prohibiting street level or first floor residential uses in specified overlay districts, and require buildings in overlay districts to be vacant no more than 60 days or the residential use can’t be re-established.
Supporters says they’re planning for the future by attracting small business.
Opponents call it government overreach and an infringement on property owners rights.
After several hours of comments from those for and against, the proposal was sent back to the three town boards, who are expected to return with revisions to be considered at the August 4 APC meeting.
