(Franklin County, IN) – One person was injured in a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 52 just east of Brookville around 5:20 p.m. last Thursday evening.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says an SUV driven by 19-year-old Kira Gamble of Connersville was westbound on 52 when she fell asleep at the wheel and her vehicle went left of center and collided with a truck towing two anhydrous ammonia tanks, operated by 27-year-old Jacob Orschell of Brookville.

Gamble’s SUV then struck a pickup truck driven by 27-year-old Rebecca Holland while Orschell’s vehicle hit a utility pole.

Two other vehicles heading west on U.S. 52 behind Gamble were also involved in the wreck.

Thirty-three-old Donald Rea of Laurel was driving his pickup truck and 22-year-old Ashley Moore of Hebron, Kentucky, was operating a cin her 2017 Hyundai Elantra, were both westbound
on U.S. 52 behind Gamble.

Rea was unable to avoid the colliding vehicles, when his vehicle struck Orschell’s truck.

Moore swerved off of the roadway to also avoid the original collision, causing damage to her vehicle.

Gamble’s SUV caught fire but she was able to get out prior to it becoming fully engulfed.

One of the tanks ruptured, which caused it to leak anhydrous ammonia.

Gamble was taken by ambulance to UC Medical Center in Cincinnati for treatment.

U.S. 52 was closed between Blue Creek and Holland roads for about three hours while deputies investigated and crews cleaned up the debris.

Franklin County deputies were assisted by Indiana State Police, the Brookville Police Department, Brookville and Cedar Grove volunteer fire departments, and Letts EMS.
