(Versailles, IN) – A Greensburg man who was convicted by a jury in Ripley County in February of Operating While Intoxicated with a Prior Offense within seven years (Level 6 felony) has received the maximum sentence.
Forty-nine-year-old Nelson Harmeyer, Jr. admitted after the guilty verdict to being a Habitual Vehicular Substance Offender.
At the March 17 sentencing hearing, the judge agreed with the State’s recommendation that the maximum 10-and-a-half-year sentence is appropriate for Harmeyer Jr. due to his lengthy criminal history that includes five prior OWI convictions.
Harmeyer Jr. recently finished an eight-year sentence on similar charges.
Prosecutor Ric Hertel said, “The community was safer with Harmeyer Jr. incarcerated.”
The lead investigator in the case was Ripley County Sheriff’s Deputy Ned Thompson, who testified as the State’s primary witness at the trial.
Rae Schuler was the prosecutor representing the State of Indiana.
