Greensburg Sets Up Unofficial Detour

(Greensburg, IN) – Motorists in Greensburg and parts of Decatur and Ripley counties can expect to be impacted this spring by a lengthy closure of a major roadway.

INDOT plans to shut down U.S. 421 in phases for a series of bridge/structure replacements and improvements starting in May. The work is expected to last six months.

“The one that’s most impactful to the City of Greensburg is going to be right near Main Street by the Dollar General, Five Points Tire, that bridge is going to be fully replaced,” said Mayor Joshua Marsh. “So it’s going to be completely closed to traffic for about 60 days.”

The Greensburg Board of Works this week approved the use of Wilder Street as the unofficial detour, following a presentation by Street Commissioner Mark Klosterkemper, who also presented this as an information item later in the evening to city council.

“INDOT has agreed to compensate us for any damages caused to Wilder Street while that project is underway,” Marsh said. “And then Decatur County has several unofficial detours as the project moves south on 421.”

The official detour had not been disclosed by INDOT as of Friday morning.

“The second less impactful one will be the bridge right over Sand Creek that will cut off the south side of town from the Main side,” Marsh added. “But that one’s only two to three days we anticipate because it is just a microfilm that they’re putting on top of the deck of the bridge.’

The next five phases are slated to be culvert/bridge replacements south of Greensburg, and will impact people in southern Decatur County and the Napoleon and Osgood areas who use U.S. 421.

Mayor Marsh appeared on Thursday’s edition of WRBI ‘s “The Daily Pod.”
