(Greensburg, IN) – Community members are being asked by the Decatur County Health Department and Washington Township Trustee to help fill remaining volunteer shifts at the warming center at 315 S. Ireland Street in Greensburg, which remains open due to the continuing cold weather.
Organizers say the response from volunteers has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated, but several critical time slots in the coming days remain unfilled.
The greatest need is for overnight and early morning coverage, particularly between Midnight and 8 a.m., when vulnerable residents rely most on a warm, safe place to stay.
Officials say volunteers play a key role in keeping the center operational, welcoming guests, and ensuring the facility runs smoothly during these hours.
Currently, the warming center is looking for volunteers to cover the following shifts:
- Thursday, Jan. 29: 4 a.m.–8 a.m. (2 volunteers)
- Friday, Jan. 30: 4 a.m.–8 a.m. (2 volunteers)
- Saturday, Jan. 31: 4 a.m.–8 a.m. (2 volunteers)
- Sunday, Feb. 1: 12 a.m.–4 a.m. (1 volunteer), 4 a.m.–8 a.m. (2 volunteers), 12 p.m.–4 p.m. (1 volunteer), 8 p.m.–12 a.m. (2 volunteers)
- Monday, Feb. 2: 12 a.m.–4 a.m. (1 volunteer), 4 a.m.–8 a.m. (2 volunteers)
Organizers stress that even a single shift can make a meaningful difference for those facing the cold without adequate shelter.
If you’re able to volunteer, call (812) 570-8005 for more information or to sign up.
Residents who cannot volunteer are still urged to support the effort by sharing the call for volunteers with family, friends, and neighbors. Community leaders say continued public support
is essential to ensuring no one is left out in the cold.
