Jones Still Colts’ Plan

(Indianapolis) – The Indianapolis Colts appear ready to move forward with Daniel Jones as their quarterback, even after a season-ending injury cut his breakout year short.

General Manager Chris Ballard said Thursday the team is evaluating Jones “both near and long term” as it begins shaping its offseason plans. Ballard added he is not concerned about Jones’ torn Achilles complicating contract negotiations, a notable stance with the quarterback set to become a free agent this spring.

Jones, 28, took over as the Colts’ starter early in the season and quickly steadied the offense, guiding Indianapolis to an 8–2 start before suffering the injury in December. The Colts struggled to maintain that momentum after Jones went down and ultimately finished the year 8–9.

Acquired last spring, Jones beat out former first-round pick Anthony Richardson for the starting job and delivered the most consistent quarterback play the franchise has seen in recent seasons. Before the injury, he threw for more than 3,000 yards with 19 touchdown passes against eight interceptions, showing improved decision-making and efficiency within Shane Steichen’s offense.

Ballard’s comments suggest the organization views Jones as more than a short-term bridge. While his recovery timeline will be monitored closely, the Colts’ front office appears comfortable building its quarterback plans around him as free agency approaches, signaling that Jones remains central to Indianapolis’ vision heading into the offseason.
