(Greensburg, IN) — Greensburg Junior High School will host a chilly but meaningful fundraiser on Thursday, Feb. 12, as the school stages a Special Olympics Polar Plunge on campus.
Greensburg Junior High resource officer Brendan Bridges received approval from the Greensburg Board of Works to temporarily close a portion of East North Street near the school’s bus parking area to accommodate the event. The closure is expected to last from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the area fully cleared and reopened by 2 p.m., according to Bridges.
The Polar Plunge is part of a statewide fundraising effort benefiting Special Olympics Indiana, which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Participants raise money through pledges before taking the plunge into icy water as a show of support for Special Olympics athletes.
This year’s event is notable because Greensburg Junior High was selected as one of only five schools statewide approved to host an on-campus Polar Plunge. GJHS is the only junior high school among those selected. Because of the campus location, organizers will install a large temporary swimming pool on the school’s bus pad for the plunge.
Polar Plunge events are known for their festive atmosphere, often featuring themed costumes, team participation and friendly fundraising challenges, while raising critical funds that support athletic training, competitions and inclusion programs throughout the year.
Organizers note that cold-water immersion can carry health risks, including hypothermia and cardiovascular stress, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions. Participants are encouraged to take appropriate precautions before entering the water.
Residents interested in learning more about the Polar Plunge or supporting Decatur County Special Olympics can find additional information through the organization’s website.
