Walking Into the New Year

(Versailles, IN) — The new year began on foot for dozens of Hoosiers who chose fresh air and forest trails over sleeping in.

About 80 people gathered at Versailles State Park on New Year’s Day to take part in Indiana’s annual First Day Hikes program, a statewide initiative that invites the public to start the year outdoors with guided, no-cost hikes.

Versailles was one of several southern Indiana locations participating in the event. Similar hikes were held at Brookville Lake, Brown County State Park and Clifty Falls State Park, offering walkers and hikers a chance to ring in the calendar year amid winter scenery.

First Day Hikes are held nationwide each Jan. 1, encouraging residents to kick off the year with physical activity while exploring public lands close to home. In Indiana, the program is coordinated through the state park system and typically draws participants of all ages and experience levels.

Organizers say the hikes are designed to be welcoming and accessible, providing a low-pressure way to enjoy nature — and start the year moving.
